Head coach Sue Behme has high hopes for the first Lacrosse team in Fresno State history. Coming from Nazareth College on the east coast, Behme has spent the 15 years coaching, 14 of them being Lacrosse. Knowing that Lacrosse is a developing sport on the west coast, Behme was excited for a new challenge with the opportunity to start the program in the right way.
With the origination of Lacrosse being on the east coast, Behme claims there is no real difference. One of the biggest challenges she claims is working with players that have never played at this high of a level, but since the majority of coaches come from the east coast the progression of the game is developing.
Behme came in with a vision for where she wants to take her team. By living and moving in the direction she wants to go it has been very rewarding so far.
To some spectators it might seem as though it has been a rough start in the win/loss column, but for Behme, the goals the team are setting and achieving are very promising. With her program developing as a team, Behme states the hardest transition is wanting the team to get better faster, but she also has the patience of where her team is at. The team has progressed so much that Behme admitted to honestly forgetting that some players have never played before.
In order to overcome adversity and win a game the team needs to play consistent offense and defense. In the game against U.C. Davis, Fresno State held the Aggies 2-4 in the second half by winning draw controls, causing turnovers, and playing with confidence.
Behme expects her team to play up to this level all the time now. In the games through March, Fresno state has placed on the higher end with saves per game, caused turnovers, and is placed third for not giving up many fouls.
Four games into their season and the first Fresno State Lacrosse team has a positive outlook. When asked about how Behme would feel after their first win she stated, “This whole season has been a first, the first goal, save, won draw control. There is a first for everyone on the team and that is what makes this season so memorable, and that first win is going to be exciting for all of us. “
