Casey McGehee’s big league dream came true Wednesday, when Brewers manager Ken Macha told him he made the team’s opening day roster thanks to an impressive spring season. McGehee’s solid hitting and ability to play every infield position (except pitcher) earned him the promotion.

“It’s the ultimate to make a big league opening day roster,” said McGehee. “It couldn’t be scripted any better. To be wearing a big league uniform and to start the season in San Francisco is pretty cool.”

The Brewers open the regular season next Tuesday on the road against the Giants. McGehee’s parents live in nearby Santa Cruz where he grew up. “I went to Giants and A’s games as a kid,” he said. “Now I’m going to play against the Giants. I couldn’t be happier.”

McGehee is batting .345 with 6 homers (second on the team) and 15 RBI this spring. His hot hitting prompted the Brewers to release infielder Mike Lamb, opening the door for McGehee to stay with the big league club. He will get an occasional start, but his main priority is pinch hitting.

“The role I’m in is to come off the bench and get hits,” said McGehee. “Hopefully I can do that and it leads to more playing time.”

The Brewers wrap up the spring season against the White Sox in Arizona today, followed by a pair of games against the Dodgers Friday and Saturday before their season opener in San Francisco.

McGehee, Jeff Weaver (Dodgers) and Matt Garza (Rays) are the only former Fresno State baseball players in the major leagues.
